Position Summary

The Data Engineer – Biostatistician/Epidemiologist, Health Equity will be responsible for designing and maintaining high-quality data pipelines and models to support advanced public health analytics. This role blends technical engineering, epidemiological insight, and health equity expertise to enable robust disease surveillance, health metric development, and data governance. You will work in collaboration with programmatic teams, data stewards, and policy advisors to ensure data models align with real-world public health workflows and priorities.

Key Responsibilities

Public Health Data Engineering

  • Collaborate with technical leads and data stewards to identify and connect to public health data sources.
  • Design, develop, and maintain data ingestion pipelines for structured and semi-structured datasets.
  • Implement automated data extraction, transformation, and loading (ELT/ETL) into Snowflake.
  • Apply data cleansing, deduplication, normalization, and transformation techniques for data quality.

Analytical Model & Metric Development

  • Translate analytical requirements into optimized data models and data marts within Snowflake.
  • Support prevalence studies, disease surveillance, and case tracking with curated datasets.
  • Design analytic models and dashboards, applying epidemiologic methods to Tableau and Snowflake outputs.
  • Incorporate SDOH (Social Determinants of Health), race/ethnicity, and health equity metrics into designs.

Public Health Program Support

  • Advise DPH programs on structuring analytics and reporting for accurate and meaningful impact.
  • Ensure Snowflake models align with epidemiological logic, program documentation, and standards.
  • Support dashboard builds with validated metrics and program-specific business logic.

Data Governance & Stewardship

  • Coordinate metadata standards, documentation, and stewardship across bureaus and programs.
  • Ensure new systems and data flows support public health workflows and policy objectives.
  • Partner with EOHHS data SMEs, data strategy leads, and DMI teams on enterprise data modeling.
  • Contribute to business glossaries, data dictionaries, and governance artifacts for sustainability.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, public health analytics, or epidemiological research
  • Experience with Snowflake, ELT/ETL development, and large-scale data ingestion
  • Hands-on knowledge of public health data systems and population health indicators
  • Strong understanding of epidemiologic methods and biostatistics
  • Ability to translate analytical requirements into technical solutions and models
  • Familiarity with Tableau or other dashboarding tools

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Public Health, or related technical field
  • Knowledge of SDOH, health equity evaluation, and public health reporting standards
  • Experience in state or local health departments or similar government entities
