Position Summary

The Bramcolm team is seeking a Senior Engineer – Modeling Engineering who will lead efforts to collect, validate, and build sophisticated data models that support the reliable operation and planning of electric grid systems. You’ll work with transmission owners, utilities, and market participants to ensure accurate representation of the power system in operational and planning tools.

The right person will be part of an experienced and diverse team foundational to maintaining grid reliability and supporting the energy transition. You’ll have the opportunity to work on groundbreaking projects including model management system implementations, energy management system upgrades, market system improvements, and the integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) into planning, operations, and market systems.

As a Senior Power Systems Modeling Engineer, you’ll apply your technical skills, interpersonal abilities, and knowledge of power systems to deliver value for diverse stakeholders across utility operations, planning, and market functions.

Key Responsibilities

Power System Model Development & Maintenance

  • Lead the effort to collect, validate, and integrate power system data from transmission owners and market participants
  • Build and maintain accurate data models for systems that operate, protect, and plan the electric grid
  • Take ownership and responsibility for maintaining and improving critical portions of client power system models
  • Ensure model accuracy through rigorous validation processes and quality control procedures
  • Coordinate with multiple stakeholders to resolve modeling discrepancies and data quality issues

Model Management & Process Improvement

  • Help design and implement modern model management systems and workflows
  • Build and craft future modeling processes using advanced model management platforms
  • Develop standardized procedures for model updates, version control, and change management
  • Create documentation for modeling standards, best practices, and procedures
  • Identify opportunities for automation and process optimization in modeling workflows

Technical Analysis & System Support

  • Perform power flow analysis, contingency analysis, and state estimation studies
  • Support transmission and distribution planning activities through accurate system modeling
  • Conduct transient stability analysis and other dynamic studies as needed
  • Validate model performance against real-world system behavior
  • Troubleshoot modeling issues and provide technical solutions

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with operations, planning, and market teams to understand modeling requirements
  • Understand how modeling work impacts multiple departments and operational functions
  • Serve as a technical liaison between engineering teams and external stakeholders
  • Provide modeling expertise to support operational and planning studies
  • Participate in industry working groups and standards development activities

Distributed Energy Resources Integration

  • Support the incorporation of DERs into planning, operations, and market system models
  • Develop modeling approaches for solar, wind, battery storage, and other emerging technologies
  • Address unique challenges of modeling distributed and variable generation resources
  • Collaborate on projects advancing grid modernization and clean energy integration

Stakeholder Engagement & Communication

  • Build and maintain relationships with transmission owners and market participants
  • Communicate technical modeling concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Coordinate data collection efforts and resolve modeling questions with external parties
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders
  • Present modeling results and recommendations to leadership and client teams

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in one of the following engineering disciplines:
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Electrical and Electronic Engineering
    • Electrical and Computer Engineering
    • Computer Engineering
    • Power Systems Engineering
    • Or closely related engineering field

Experience

  • Minimum of 4 years of proven relevant experience in power systems, which could involve:
    • Power system modeling and data management
    • Power flow software and analysis tools
    • Transmission or distribution planning
    • State estimation and system monitoring
    • Transient stability analysis
    • Contingency analysis and reliability assessment
    • Electric utility electrical engineering work

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of power system fundamentals including:
    • AC power flow and load flow analysis
    • Transmission system operations and planning
    • Generator and load modeling
    • Network topology and connectivity
  • Experience with power system analysis software such as:
    • PSSĀ®E (Siemens PTI)
    • PowerWorld Simulator
    • PSLF (GE)
    • PSCAD or similar transient analysis tools
    • Other industry-standard modeling platforms
  • Knowledge of power system modeling standards and data formats:
    • CIM (Common Information Model)
    • ICCP/TASE.2
    • PSS/E raw and dynamic data formats
    • NERC modeling data requirements
  • Proficiency with data analysis and validation techniques
  • Experience with database management and data quality processes

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure
  • Experience in the electric utility industry, particularly with:
    • Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs) or Independent System Operators (ISOs)
    • Transmission planning or operations departments
    • Energy market operations
    • Reliability coordination
  • Knowledge of electric industry standards and regulations:
    • NERC reliability standards (MOD, TPL, FAC)
    • FERC regulations and market rules
    • IEEE standards for power system modeling
  • Experience with emerging grid technologies:
    • Distributed Energy Resources (solar, wind, storage)
    • Advanced inverter technologies
    • Demand response and flexible loads
    • Electric vehicle integration
  • Familiarity with energy management systems (EMS) and SCADA systems
  • Experience with model management systems or similar data platforms
  • Programming or scripting skills:
    • Python for power system automation
    • MATLAB or similar technical computing tools
    • SQL for database queries
    • PowerShell or Bash scripting
  • Experience with real-time operations or control center environments
  • Knowledge of energy markets including day-ahead and real-time market operations
  • Understanding of grid modernization initiatives and smart grid technologies
